Kochi

Transfer to Kochi, known as ‘Queen of Arabian Sea’, a town with a fascinating blend of cultures thanks to the fact that through history traders and travelers frequented the place. In the afternoon you discover the secrets of the Mattancherry Palace (Closed on Friday), which was built by the Portuguese as a gift for the Raja of Cochin in exchange for trading rights.

The main attractions of the Palace are the series of murals painted on the wooden walls, the Jewish Synagogue (Closed on Friday & Saturday), built in 1568 AD, the great scrolls of the Old Testament, the copper plates in which the grants of privilege made by the Cochin rulers were recorded and the exquisite Chinese hand-painted tiles. The Santa Cruz Basilica, built by Portuguese and elevated to Cathedral of Pope Paul IV in 1558 and the St. Francis Church, and a protestant Church built by Portuguese in 1510 AD and it is believed to be the first church built by the European in India are definitely worth a visit. Vasco da Gama was buried here.

In the evening you go and see the typical and picturesque Chinese fishing nets. These are large nets that hang from bamboo or teak posts and are still used by local fishermen in Fort Kochi to catch fish attracted by the lights suspended above the net. A traditional dance-drama performance - The Kathakali in a local theatre - rounds off a full day’s program.
