Day 4 - 5

Agra

Along the route you will pause a while at Fatephur Sikri, the medieval ‘city of victory’ made by Mughal Emperor Akbar (today a ghost town). The site has been classified a UNESCO World heritage. It was abandoned 15 years after construction due to a pressing need for water. Today you visit India's most celebrated 16th-century monument, the world-renowned Taj Mahal. This jewel of Mughal architecture was built as a temple dedicated to the expression of eternal love by Shah Jahan to the bride Mumtaz.

The construction of the mausoleum required 20.000 craftsmen and took 22 years to complete. Near the gardens of the Taj Mahal stands another edifice of importance: the Red fort of Agra, built in 1565 on the banks of the Yamuna River, which fed the moats around the fortress-palace. This powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses, within its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls, the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises many fairy-tale palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques. Later in the afternoon you visit Sikandra, the Mausoleum of Akbar.
