Port Fairy
During your journey along the Great Ocean Road is is worthwhile to make a short detour to Cape Otway Lighthouse, the oldest working lighthouse in Victoria, built way back in 1846. Along the "Shipwreck Coast" next on your itinerary, you drive past the famous Twelve Apostles. These rock formations emerging from the ocean waters a picture-perfect background for a photo to send to the home front. A visit to Logan’s Beach between May and October is the ideal time to spot southern right whales. In Port Fairy you travel back in time as you walk past the old whitewashed houses, quirky shops and street corners bars.

Halls Gap
From Port Fairy you head north to Dunkveld, the gateway to the southern Grampians, a region that includes a series of sandstone mountain ranges and forests teeming with wildlife and Aboriginal rock art. Those who feel fit can venture on the challenging climb to the summit of Mt Sturgeon or Mt Abrupt. Expect stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and plains. Take the Grampians Road straight through the national park towards Halls Gap, where you will spend the night.

Halls Gap - Mt Gambier
You cross the border into South Australia as you head towards the Coonawarra wine region, especially known for its Cabernet Sauvignon wine production. Visit the delicate limestone caves and ancient fossil bed of the impressive Naracoorte Caves (world heritage site). Mount Gambier's main attraction is the Blue Lake, a volcanic crater lake in which waters turn cobalt blue in the summer.
